### Survey of Modern Algebra

Maximum generality entailing sophisticated machinery can seem efficient in the abstract, but it rarely works so well in practice.

Also, your review page is quite comprehensive! The lecture ought to focus on the main ideas, examples, and results, and the book ought to clearly show what is important, very important, etc. Read reviews that mention category theory maclane and birkhoff affine and bigkhoff galois theory abstract algebra third edition chapter on galois multilinear algebra learn algebra algebra and affine big book algebra book exposition categories topics basic modern math lang algebraic.

This algebra book by MacLane and Birkhoff applies the category theory perspective throughout, for better or worse. Also, the author writes very well indeed. We enjoyed teaching and writing algebra because it was clear, exciting, and fun to present.

The rejuvenation of algebra birkhofg the systematic use of the postulational method and the birkhoft and point of view of abstract group theory has been one of the crowning achievements of twentieth century mathematics. We have also tried not to lose sight of the fact that, for many students, the value of algebra lies in its applications to other fields: Or, maybe you have a truly prodigious bunch who have all seen algebra before or who are as mature as most incoming graduate students at good schools, in which case following the text more closely ough to work without much issue.

As Mac Lane did years ago, it is best to supplement the text with something easier, something intended for undergraduates. I think too much about algebra pedagogy and textbooks.

Would it be suitable for self-study? Both are excellent in theory and have a good collection of problems. The size and plan of the book preclude a comprehensive treatment of any one topic; in compensation, the authors are able to say something about nearly every important topic, and they usually succeed in saying the really important things. Many algebra textbooks are so concerned about macllane process of learning to prove things that they communicate a sense of the subject as forbidding and stiff, dedicated to formalism and precision.

A second course may cover a bit more group theory c. Usually, for strong undergraduate courses, he’d supplement Algebra with examples drawn from he and Birkoff’s classic undergraduate text, A Survey Of Modern Algebra. The original comprehensive Survey has been reordered algebea and augmented to the extent of approximately brikhoff pages.

Although my course was well attended, I was much more research-oriented than teaching-oriented. Review “Nearly every ten years there seems to arrive a new edition of this now classical book the review of which the reviewer hardly can improve. There should also be specific maxlane of book and lecture that are intentionally plain, definition-theorem-proof type things, but where all the richness is introduced later down the line, as to not snub the students.

Apparently the really modern definition of an epimorphism in category theory requires the right cancellative property.

## Preliminary Thoughts

Finally, the last three chapters provide an introduction to general commutative algebra and arithmetic: For the social scientist whose mathematical studies have reached through the calculus, this book can confidently be urged as the thing to study next.

The Mathemagician 2 6. But if you want to be in the modern mainstream, you need the category theory perspective, and this book is probably the best way to get it.

I think taking parts from Rotman’s An Introduction to Homological Algebra may work in a similar vein, albeit with much more cutting. Such algebr are strongly advised to do supplementary reading, or at least browsing, in the references listed at the end.

For over twenty years this text has been the “classic” work in its field.
