It was published injust at the time I needed it and one of my tutors at St Martin’s School of Art recommended it to me. It makes you think.

If I hadn’t read this for a book club, I don’t think I would have picked it up. Too many other comments on fashion’s relation to place, time, status, and opinion are similarly dubious or banal on the topic of color, for example, we learn that white symbolizes purity, innocence, and status; black, gloom, guilt, sophistication.

Unfortunately, as the book was published in”modern-day” does not encompass some of the more interesting fads of the ‘s, and perhaps dwells a bit too much on the ‘s. Though Lurie has some interesting things to say about the history of clothes: People come in more colors than blonde red and brunette.
