There are so many memorable scenes that fuse this disfuse account into a work of singular personality and effect. A really fascinating story of true events surrounding the occupation of this stone city in Albania before, during, and after the war.
Remember nne is fiction. During a bombing, a young girl kisses her secret boyfriend and is hauled home by her hair, where she disappears in what her ever-searching boyfriend fears is an honor killing. The older boy tells him MacBeth is way too advanced for him, but he takes it anyway and falls under its spell. These crones were very robust, all nerve and bone, even though they ate very little and smoked and drank coffee all day long.
There is the old woman who comments on each piece of news that it is the end of the world. The city is made of stone kaeare, topped with slate rooves.
It might have taken me 6 months of sporadic reading to finish it, but that was through no fault of the kfonik. There were epidemics of witchcraft that terrified the residents.
