They spoke to an audience that knew what had been done but refused to look into the future to find underlying tensions within aspects of world building. Individual chapters vary in quality and usefulness, but the overall book is worthwhile no matter how experienced or inexperienced you are.

I think all of these essays do a good job of outlining the role religions play in fantasy worlds, while recommending ways you could deviate or further explore those tropes in fun and interesting ways to fit your world. It has the kind of advice you’d give to a film director preparing to make his first period film, not the kind of thing you’d give either to a novice GM writing his or worldvuilding first world or to an experienced GM looking for ways to work more efficiently.

But even so, the essays particularly at the end, are exceptional.

Take it as read that The Kobold Guide to Worldbuilding deserves the extra half-star. The first five or six essays I easily could’ve skipped.

The next essay provides a pretty good quick guide to mapmaking that has some useful tidbits that could be helpful in designing a worldbuildinb, but realistic and interesting map.

The infinite possibilities of good worldbuilding means that I do not want to be told what to create because creativity is limitless, but knowing what major problems there are to be avoided is universal. worldbuildkng

A decent resource for writers, but kovold you read more of these types of books, you start to see the same advice and tips over and over.

The latter discusses some of the problems and opportunities of a setting where magic is common enough to impact everyday life.


Remember to check out the wiki for lots of resources and tips on starting out! I will be returning to this tome frequently. Other than some common sense points, I didn’t see how this essay was all that useful either. While the book is more or less focussed on the aspirant game-world designer – with a nod to those of use that guidee it as a sport and a pastime – much of the content would be equally applicable to fantasy writers looking to improve kkobold world-building chops.

Digest-sized and running barely pages, the truly amazing thing about it is just how much good guude the writers have packed into it. But for me, the most important advice I can learn from experienced worldbuilders is what NOT to do and to learn from the mistakes they made. Alas, the fare is hit-or-miss. While everyone in the book is knowledgeable in RPG building and their credentials are impeccable, I read it as more of a “What not to do” rather than a comprehensive guide to “Construction” which is what I hoped it was.

The Kobold Guide to Worldbuilding will spark some new ideas and help you add the proper doses of verisimilitude and outlandishness.
