I’ve probably read most of his work, but there are only 3 of his books I’ve kept to enjoy reading again. This book hints at so many possible plotlines and they go nowhere. Once aboard, they are befriended by “Girdie”, an attractive, capable, experienced woman left impoverished by her late husband. With all that girly stuff going on, Podkayne’s initial aspiration of becoming a star-ship captain quickly fades into the background and eventually disappears all together.

As a book I found that there was a lot of detail as to who she was, who her family was, and the particulars of the voyage, though I was quite surprised that they only got as a far as Venus. This was entertaining, a little thin, but a well played use of science fiction politics an I like Robert A. This would be in the not so much category.


Murray Rothbard might be tempted to point out that a single corporation dominating the economy would be as blind as any government, but Heinlein is a touch stingy on details; his main intent seems to be an exploration of how the profit motive keeps violence to a minimum.
