The encyclopedia is primarily designed as a reference work to fiction, and so you won’t find an entry for “Verne, Jules,” but you will find entries for “Captain Nemo” and “Fogg, Phileas.

These entries also make for interesting reads in their own right. Oh, and reading those books. The nineteenth century was one of the richest periods for the exploration of the Fantastic in art, and the literature of the time gave us such characters as Sherlock Holmes, Ivanhoe, Judah Ben Hur, Allan Quatermain, Quasimodo, the Wonderful Victkriana of Oz.

These act as descriptions of trends in the works of the time and establish social, political, and literary contexts in which the texts can be read. He suspects that only people who know him will get the enfyclopedia in the second half of that sentence. A thick, beautiful, well-researched comprehensive look at British and European sci-fi, pulp and fantasy in the Victorian era.

It is, in short, a reference book that can be profitably read from one cover to another although, given its length, it does take a while. There are other problems with the book. Proudly powered by WordPress. Hard to find now, I was lucky to be able to get a copy when it first came out. I would hate to imagine trying to actually use the hardcopy version of it as an actual reference book.

The book, for instance, doesn’t contain anything similar to the affected second person address of the website’s introduction. Wells, to Fantasstic newspaper serials and Chinese martial arts novels, The Encyclopedia of Fantastic Victoriana is a truly exhaustive look at every aspect fanastic fantastic literature in the days of Queen Victoria.

If Fantastic Victoriana were an encyclopedia in the mould of, say, Britannica —that of a reference work to be consulted periodically for homework or the resolution to a bet in the pub—the referencing system would be a far more important issue. Like Moorcock, I don’t agree with all of Nevins’s views. Complaints would be the amount of space given to some characters over others and an index without page numbers.

As the title suggests this is in fact a straightforward encyclopedia, featuring listings and write-ups summarizing background, explaining character traits, etc…for hundreds of characters, ranging from the obvious to the obscure.
