I loved the main character Ayla; one of the bravest woman characters I’ve ever come across in a story. As a nother side note, I believe I mentioned on here in a recent book review that I have never belonged to a real life book club, I just talk about books on here.
There were a few times when she or her son got really close to that Mary Sue line–the amount of times she breaks rules and is able to keep from being killed is pretty astonishing.
She is proud, strong, very intelligent, and able to make leaps of logic that often get her into trouble with her adopted dsl. After traveling with them for a while and starting to heal, Ayla wanders away from the group when they stop to discuss what they should do since they haven’t found a new home and she discovers a huge, beautiful drl, perfect for their needs; many of the people begin to regard Ayla as lucky, especially since good fortune continues to come their way as she lives among them.

Ayla is without a doubt one of my favorite fictional characters, she suffers so much hardship but she never gives in and she always fights to survive. That being said, the story can get a little goofy and redundant in the later books, and I can see how some may call it “prehistoric porn” as the author is as descriptive when it comes to Ayla’s sexual encounters as she is in describing the making of a healing poultice of mustard seeds or a ochre tunic.

From time to time the conversation felt too modern. Love from some of her newfound family, but abuse from a man who can’t understand her desire for more than her assigned role as a female in the clan.
