I’m glad to discover this rare book that changes my gaze about “beautiful photography”. The images were rampantly blurred, grainy, scratched, and often just muddled shades of gray.

Moriyama, of course, has his own distant roots in the avant-garde precedents of collage, Dada, Pop, and so on, but the one aspect intrinsic to his work that should be recognized is its status as a unique reflection of Japanese culture and history.

Moriyama discusses the period inwhen he, perhaps following Jean-Luc Godard’s attempts to ‘destroy cinema’ by subverting the medium, set out to destroy photography, presenting his publisher with a set of damaged negatives, which could be printed in any way the publisher saw fit.
