There are a wonderful pages in the book, too long to quote here, about the relationship between the beloved and the loved. Recommended for readers who glory in conjunctions which are ill-matched and pitiful, persons who know the intimate business of everybody, and those who keep in mind the cheapness of human life. But if the paper is held for a moment to the fire then the letters turn brown and the meaning becomes clear.

The author had wanted to study at Juliard. McCullers’ slim volume of stories is reminiscent of Sherwood Anderson’s wonderful Winesburg, Ohio with soul-wrenching insights, more grimly presented than the gentle I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith, and nothing like Grunberg or Nabokov.
