This book started out great, but quickly got repetitive for me. It is not intended to dazzle the reader and carry them rapidly from one entertaining experience to the next.

There is a piffling controversy surrounding this book’s use of a Victorian historian’s actual letters in a fictional context, but seriously people!

For all [its] breadth and sweep, Angle of Repose achieves an effect of intimacy, hence of immediacy, and, though much of the material is ‘historical,’ an effect of discovery also, of experience newly minted rather than a pageantlike re-creation. Is Lyman Stegmer a reliable narrator? The wind has magic in it, and the air is full of birds and birdsong.
