The last chapter drew in religous examples and talked a little about the Catholic Imagination. Danto asserts that this was one of Warhol’s breakthroughs, and unconvincingly dismisses DuChamp’s ready-mades as not really making the point. Especially where Danto is writing about the Brillo Boxes – awesomeness. Danto helps readers to understand not only Warhol and his art, but what came just before and what has come since. I wouldn’t recommend this to anybody. Danto suggests that “what makes him an American icon is that his subject matter is always something that the ordinary American understands: This little book on an “artist” by Danto is an excellent explanation of the philosophical-psychological aspect of what makes art art with an emphasis on pop art which is perhaps the most exaggerated example of how that all works.

He offers close readings of individual Warhol works, including their social context and philosophical dimensions, key differences with predecessors such as Marcel Duchamp, and parallels awrhol successors like Jeff Koons.

Most interesting was the topic, “What warho art? You can focus on the Marilyn paintings, the Brillo Boxes or the Campbell Soup Cans and begin to understand how Warhol changed how we understand what is art.
