The Last Empress is every bit as good as Empress Orchid as a piece of writing, it is just that I enjoyed the first book in the series more. It provided a nice reprieve from the modern Chinese emprss that I had been reading recently.

I’ll be interested to read some more historical fiction in future, I’ve got my eye on HHhHwhich has been highly recommended to me. I’ve always been a fan mij Oriental historical fiction, since they are so much rich with beauty, so many elements and oriental flavor that is riveting to read about. The history of China in this book was fascinating.

Similarly, I started out liking and empathizing with Orchid but eventually grew disenchanted with her as the story became less about her and more about China and her character became increasingly flat.
Once there, she wins the jaded and impotent emperor’s affections through a combination of plucky outspokenness and sexual wiles, and soon falls pregnant. At times her orfhid is textbook-flat, and she sometimes loses track of her teeming cast of characters for example, Orchid’s dangerous mother-in-law and mentally ill sister. Every book club member was memorized by the vista, the palaces, and the minute discussions of tedious and centuries-old traditions.
