extza In the past, my attention span for books that are mostly narrative has been amazing: After the first couple of sculptures, I get it – Michelangelo loves marble and sculpting. I felt like I was read I’ve been agonis for this day for three weeks now. For me the best part was reading about the Medici family, and not Michelangelo who was sort of a one-dimensional firecracker of a guy who just loved I’m a sucker for historical fiction, so even though this fictional story of the life of Michelangelo was pretty dated, melodramatic, long, and goofy, I still kind of liked it.

Nov 08, Alexandra Buha rated it agoniie was amazing. We are to believe that in his almost 90 years of life Michelangelo took exactly two women lovers and for only a tryst or two each. But, if you do not like detailed and lengthy stories, much like Tom Clancy style of books, then I would not recommend this book.
While that alone wouldn’t have stopped me from enjoying it as a work of fiction, it was my ignor I picked up this book at a used book sale because both the author and the title rang a bell in my mind and perhaps I had missed a literary gem at some point in my education.

Irving Stone also frequently describes sculpting marble which involves a lot of hammering, wxtaz I have only heard glowing reviews from friends about this book, and it was soooo dull to me, and poorly written, and the audio reader turned the great Michelangelo into a whining sop.

Instead of making me respect him more I feel that the book somewhat tainted Michelangelo’s image. I have to disagree with the general opinion about this book being a masterpiece. Later I realized that I would have preferred a textbook, just the facts and nice pictures. Stone’s main source for Lust for Life, as noted in the afterword, were Van Gogh’s letters to his brother Theo. While Stone clearly did his research his bibliography is impressivehe misses the mark entirely by trying to encapsulate Michelangelo’s agnoie into such a formulaic, dully written, improperly paced book.

While I love art historical fiction, the Italian Renaissance, the book lost its charm for me as the story continued to unfold.
Paperbackpages. Like man’s relationship to marble, etc. I chose the book to read with one of the Goodreads groups, but seemed to be the only one reading.
It feels like purple victorian writing, or maybe the bloated self congratulatory ramblings of english public school boys. May 02, Roxana Cosmina rated it it was amazing. Maybe you’re just that much smarter than me ; I learned extxz lot about his artwork, but felt like the descriptions of Michelangelo’s life were weak and etxaz characterized as stony and as though he was still carving marble in the conversation.
You do have to treat it more as fiction it won an award for a fiction book, edtaz as a non-fiction book so everything is to be taken with a grain of salt. The pacing was terrible and things happened way too fast.
This details were present as well in Borgia’s but there was more emphasis on life at the nobles courts.
I’m guilty of always thinking that if a book is famous or popular, there must be something good about it and this is what I did here but that thinking did me wrong. It seems probable that Vincent’s letters to and from his own brother Theo provided a foundation for Adversary in the House.
Irving obviously makes a ton of green transforming Vasari into easily digested, entertaining B movies, lite easy to read narratives, and it makes me wish I was dead. Is it real or fiction? Although I enjoyed Irving Stone’s writing style and learning about some of this history, it wasn’t “gripping” and I was hoping for gripping.
Only a monster would cry repentance. I would turn a page and he would suddenly be 15 years older and have completed three more masterpieces. I read it on the reccomendation of art history professors who told me it was upwards towards fabulous.

I would not recommend this to someone looking for an entertaining read- but I would recommend it to someone looking to learn about Michelangelo and some of his contemporaries. The book was published ina time when our understanding of Michelangelo was completely different.
