I went into this book without any expectations. If you can stick with it the latter part of the book does pick up and things move along nicely when you get to the crux of things.
The book has all the ingrediants of a whodunnit sending you up blind allies and brin Detective Alice Madison has only been in Seattle PD’s Homicide Unit for five weeks when what will be the biggest case in Seattle’s recent hits her and eias partner Detective Sergant Brown and a very rough Christmas for them both. There is little to fault in terms of characterisation of the piece and I found rookie detective Alice Madison, a compelling character defined by her essential ordinariness.
As soon as I’m told a book contains a twist which will take my breath away and I discover it features twins no spoilers I always hope that it’s not going to go that way, down the path so many have 1 before. There are quite a few instances like that and every time it pulled me out of what was going on and had me repeating the phrases in my head to try to get them to sound right. Another reason is the character relationships.
Questo libro ha un unico, grande difetto: I have never taken so long to read a book. Someone in a cage of knives or blades has to crawl out.

Sep 30, Robin rated it really liked it Shelves: My only gripe with The Gift of Darkness was that the writing style wasn’t always one that I found particularly comfortable to read. The stunning thriller with a twist to take your breath away! But before Alice Madison can really conquer this case she has to tackle head on das unsolved crime 25 years before.
Books by Valentina Giambanco. Valeentina mystery with the word DARK in the title, female detective. Some crime novels have a sophistication and maturity about them, this is one of them. To further add to the confusion, at times, the present was written in present tense, depending on which character’s point of view we were seeing things from. But maybe that’s just me. With slow pacing I expect a lot of tension building, but that only happened after pages. Unfortunately, you do need to read the first half to know who the characters are and how they fit together but if you are patient you will be rewarded with a much better second half. Details upon details are thrust upon you as you read, so it’s a bit difficult to keep up with the sheer volume of information.

What really surprised me was that quite early in the novel, we are actually told who the killer is. I could predict practically every event that occurred, some which were probably intentional by the author as she gave hints about them- both small and largeothers which were likely supposed to be surprises, but unfortunately were not. The Gift of Darkness is one such book, and aside from making this title a little tricky to review, I would love to give the author, and more importantly her editor, a metaphorical shake as this book, instea Very occasionally a book comes along that is so frustrating to review because it consistently lurches the reader from a thoroughly enjoyable plot, punctuated by avoidable and annoying flaws, and casts doubt on the fact that actually beneath its surface there could indeed lie a brilliant book.
Although to me much of it felt very much like any other mediocre crime thriller, the story did start to get exciting later on in the book. I love to discover authors new to me.
All the evidence points the police to a well-known killer, John Cameron, who has eluded them for some time. AmazonGlobal Ship Orders Internationally.

And then the occasional moments where I could have sworn I could have sworn that other than giving her the name Alice, instead of say, Allan, she fit the trope of the usual male lead in a crime thriller: The book has all the ingrediants of a whodunnit sending you up blind allies and bringing you back down again. In an overall strong supporting cast, the other stand-out character for me was the wily John Cameron, identified early in the book as a possible suspect in the opening homicide, who has to navigate between eluding a killer himself, but also to overcome his natural distrust of the police to work with Alice in tracking said killer.
Interesting premise, poor execution. Only at one point Madison starts to follow her intuition instead of proper investigation way, because she feels there is more to the story.
Dogimont Nicolas rated it it was ok Dec 31, In che modo la morte del bambino, amico di Cameron e Sinclair, avvenuta 25 anni prima, avesse qualcosa a che fare con la morte dello stesso Sinclair e di tutta la sua famiglia.
